Essay Transitions in Writing

Essay Transitions in WritingIn studying essays, you will be using several essay transitions in writing. These transitions can be used to help you make the transition from one concept to another. There are several transitions that can be used when studying an essay but the most commonly used transitions are the summation and the antithesis. When you read a paper that has multiple points of view, your goal is to get into a state where you can compare different perspectives. This is the process of saying that you have read the essay from the perspective of someone who disagrees with one or more points of view. Therefore, you must always be careful to be clear on what you mean by a 'transition.' If you use words like antithesis, the key is to be sure that you know what the writer means by this word. For example, suppose you are reading an essay and you see a statement such as 'Only the dead have seen the end of the war.' You may think that the writer means the entire essay, but in fact, th e writer means only a part of the essay. Therefore, you need to pay attention to this particular transition because you need to determine if you are looking at a beginning or an ending. To begin with, you need to see what the writer means by the word 'antithesis.' The best way to get an idea about the meaning of the word is to write out several passages of the essay and look at the transitions in writing that the writer uses. For example, in reading through the first passage, you will find that the writer uses the word 'antithesis' frequently. When you see this word, you will be able to figure out whether the writer uses it often or not. If the writer uses the word frequently, then the writer is using this word frequently because he or she wants to emphasize the first one or more of his or her arguments. On theother hand, if the writer does not use the word often, then he or she is using the word 'antithesis' rarely, meaning the second and third argument of the essay. Now, when you are comparing two arguments, you will need to keep in mind the word 'anti-.' The word 'anti-' has two meanings; first, it is the opposite of something. And second, it is the middle of a statement. Thus, when you find that the writers use the word 'antithesis,' you will need to consider the possibility that the writer is having a problem with the use of the word 'antithesis.'When you are reading a sentence, it is wise to look at the sentence from both sides of the argument. By doing this, you will see the strong point of the argument on one side of the sentence and the weak point of the argument on the other side of the sentence. Consequently, you will know the point of the transition in writing is to emphasize the strength of the statement on one side of the sentence. When you look at an essay and see a transition in writing and you find that the writer is using an antithesis, you should ask yourself whether the writer really needs to use this word or is he or she just trying to confuse you? In other words, it is just like trying to build a house. In order to have a successful project, the builder will use the word that everyone is familiar with and that is the word 'means.'
